BrooklynGreene, could you recommend a refinisher in the area that works with Heywood-Wakefield?
By the way, this table appears to have been refinished. The name of the finish was printed/stamped on the back leading you to believe this is the original champagne finish. Not terrible, but know that this is a relatively recent refinish job. The champange finish I grew up with and know oh-so-well is a cloudy finish with white pigment added to the lacquer. The finish can be very fragile over time.
All in all, this was a fine price for the seller and buyer, just about what one would expect to pay.
We still have some Haywood-Wakefield (actually a lot!: bedroom set, dining sets, livingroom chairs, side/end tables, etc.) some with the original finish and others redone. I’ve been told that since the original finish only hangs in about 50 years with normal wear, it is necessary to refinish these pieces and that it doesn’t detract terribly from their value, esp. since they are not expensive. (I could use a refinish myself!).
It’s apparently considered best to redo the piece with an approximation of the original finish for value’s sake. We had one done in champagne and it turned out really nice. I think you can buy some of these finishes in cans but it’s best to have a professional spray them on.
The table has been sold. Thanks Brownstoner readers.
