I bought this Heywood-Wakefield table on ebay. It’s cute, but the handle on the drawer looks like it’s not original–it looks like a cheap hardware store item. Anyone know what would be more appropriate, and where I can get it? Thanks.

  1. Thanks for those suggestions–I’ll check those stores and also look into having the holes simply filled–I agree that would probably be the best looking.

  2. I don’t think this little table would have had a handle on the drawer at all. Many of the drawers like this with the exposed bottom edge would not have had a handle. Furniture from this period, if the drawers even needed a handle, may have integrated handles that were often part of a larger decorative effect like with the Kohinoor bedroom set.

Later furniture did have handles like one of our diningroom sets: little gold and enameled hourglass-shaped pulls

For the piece pictured above, I’d remove the handle and have the holes filled and masked by a professional.

  3. Heywood Wakefield has lost much of its value over the past decade. Unless it really matters, it won’t effect the value and you will be paying more than it’s worth.

  4. You need a fifties style handle. Try Rejuvenation Hardware online. They have stuff from various 20th century periods. Or go to Simon’s Hardware on 3rd Ave, Manhattan. Just by telling them what you have, they might be able to suggest something.
