How does one go about getting a survey from the city? We are looking at a house built in 1910, there is no C of O, and need to get our hands on the survey. Thanks!

the city isnt going to have a survey for you. if your place was recently altered there may be an approved plot plan that would show sweiss’ shed is legal but a survey would only show that it exists, not that it is lagal. the Dept. of buildings will require a recent survey anyway (1 year)

  2. I’ve been looking into this myself because we want to replace the old leaky shed at the back of our property. After a bunch of research, we’ve realized that it makes sense to start by figuring out whether it’s a legal shed in the first place.

At any rate – here’s what I’ve been able to uncover so far. What you’re looking for is probably what the city refers to as a Plot Plan. The Department of Buildings has them – customer service number is 718-802-3675.

You’ll need to go to the DOB office in person to see your Plot Plan. They are at 210 Joralemon Street, room 818. They’re open 8:30-4pm most days (5:30pm on Tuesdays).

    Good luck!

  3. If you’re looking to buy that house, the owner should have one.

If if they don’t and you’re not lucky enough to find one there, the next step would be contacting a surveyor. If you’re planning to do any significant amount of work to the house you may well need to have a surveyor provide an updated survey for DOB filing, so if you’re serious about the house and the work, this is not a wasted cost.

If you need a surveyor, just say so here and I can post one or two, and I’m sure some other people will too.
