Facade Work
What is a general estimate cost of stripping down a painted, four story 20′ wide brownstone to original stone and having any necessary stucco work to the facade and stoop? I’ve seen this done on the brownstone across the street and it came out really well.

We recently got multiple quotes for stripping a painted 20″ bayfront to brownstone and then doing any necessary repairs. They were $50k to $75k. Perfect Renovation was the most confidence-inspiring (although not the cheapest). But we never went ahead with the project and so can’t say anything about their work.
I’m having z. abedin do mine and would recommend him. Stop by 20 sterling if you want to take a look (we’re in scratch coat mode right now). Costs from 30-40k but mine is a three story 20′ wide. Depends on how much detail work you want (around the windows, designs, etc.)
Try VinRoy Barronette – Park Slope Brownstone. His work is excellent & he’s reasonably priced. You can see work he’s doing on the west side of 6th Av between Lincoln Pl & St. John’s & his phone numbers are on a board there. He also responds quickly & keeps dates that he makes.
I had the same experience with A. Malek. Had to track him down like he was doing me a favor by taking my money. I ended up going with Z. Abedin. He was on time, actually interested in doing my job, courteous, and far more reasonably priced than A. Malek. There are a few posts with his number. Tell him Chris from Decatur Street referred you.
We just got a quote for something similar from A. Malek and it was for 65K… it took me 5 weeks and 9 phone calls before I got the quote after meeting him at our house. Good luck and please, if you do find someone you like please post it here.
Misty our block is landmarked as well and we’ve heard estimates ranging from $25K to $40K depending on lentil work and the amount of repair needed.
Call Malek Construction we hear he does good work @ reasonable prices.
Sorry Dean but LPC would not allow or approve changing a brick to a brownstone facade….can you imagine all the chaos that would ensue if they allowed folks to change facades based on aesthetic choice? There would be no need for landmarking in that instance!
Misty B — why don’t you ask your neighbor about their job? That is as good a place to start as any.
There are so many variables in pricing facade work and you will get a wide range of quotes for the same amount of work. It is important to vet anyone you get a quote from and get references from former customers and see examples of their work — recently completed and if possible, completed over 5 years ago to see how well it ages.
And Dean — if you have a brick building, why in the world would you want it to look like a brownstone? It won’t look good or age well. You will not be improving the appearance of your building. It would be like painting a marble fireplace. And if you are in a landmarked area, it will never be approved.
and a followon question – has anysone heard of a non brownstone building in a landmark area getting approval to do this?
eg, if i have a brick building can i get it made to look like a brownstone?
cheers,
Dean
