Hello. I recently received a notice for increase in property taxes. The economy being what it is, this did not come as a surprise. Although it is rather large–triple the current taxes.

On the NYC Dept of Finance website, there is information for filing a protest with the NYC Tax Commission, “if you believe that your assessed value is wrong.” Does anyone have any experience with this? I feel like it’s worth a try, but never having done this, I wonder if there’s a potential for an even higher assessment.

Anyone have any experience with this? Your advice is greatly appreciated!

  1. My taxes on a commercial property spiked up quite a lot, so last week I went to the public sessions that the Tax Commission and the DoF had in Brooklyn. I went with print-outs of the forms I thought I should fill out and photos of the property. Both groups recommended I file because DoF valued of the property at a much higher amount than I could sell the place. If the property is on the smaller side, I’d recommend doing the filing yourself. If it’s a commercial property or multi-family residential property, make sure you’ve filled out RPIE’s for 2007. Also, don’t miss the deadlines.

  2. As the president of our co-op, I can tell you this is common. There are attorneys who specialize in property tax assessment reduction. They’re not cheap, but their work often pays for itself.

If you’re interested in a name, just ask and I’ll be happy to post it.
