I have a beautiful piece of stained glass on my top floor ceiling below a skylight but it is so filthy, barely any light gets through. The skylight is sealed and bolted shut. How do I access the stained glass to clean it?? Does anyone do this professionally? I saw a similar post on this site a few years ago but there wasn’t a satisfactory answer.

Thanks in advance!

  1. I just cleaned mine. I also cut some clear plexiglass to fit and sit over the top of the colored glass that runs the perimeter. This way a flat piece of plexi is much easier to clean than many small pieces of colored glass.

I also placed some sticky foam insulation along the edges of the plexi to help seal and insulate. And I reglazed the center, removable piece of glass.

Looks way better and hopefully won’t need to be cleaned again for some time.

  2. Actually, our skylight is bolted and sealed but I called Albert Stained Glass (recommended in first comment) and they were very helpful. The guy who answered said the stained glass is usually just resting on a frame and can be CAREFULLY pushed up and brought down through the opening to be cleaned. It’s still a trick to do since it’s over a staircase but I tested the theory by pushing up on a corner gently with a broom. Sure enough, it is just resting there!

    Thanks!

  3. Don’t you traditionally access it on the roof through the skylight? I think originally they weren’t sealed and bolted shut. Sometimes they are in a little cage that unlocks.
