flat to pitched roof??
Does anyone know if the DOB would allow someone in Bklyn with a frame house to change their roof from flat to pitched? I know that it can be done, as I have seen it done, but not in NY.

Another thing to consider specifically for frames is that the building code won’t let you build on it if it’s already 2+ stories. If you’re in that situation, I would assume that you couldn’t build an attic with a pitched roof onto an existing building. (But presumably you could turn your existing top floor into an attic.) In other words, you’d have to make the building smaller to add the pitched roof, not bigger.
Did your house originally have a pitched roof? Often the attics were later built out into full floors with flat roofs.
Check your zoning. It won’t dictate anything about the shape of your roof, but it will tell you what your maximum street wall height and your maximum roof height are permitted to be. If you were changing to a roof type that raises your building height you will have to be within the height allowed in your area.
I have never seen a roof type specified in the zoning resolution for residential. I would suggest checking with an architect or engineer.
I think the first step is to check your zoning. If I’m not mistaken zoning dictates roof type.
