i have a brunham Independent boiler fairly new. it has an automatic direct water line that runs from a cold water line going in to my hot water heater. i was informed that the water level in the glass tube on the left side of the boiler should be half full, but mine is always full (pretty clean though). is this a problem? i drain a bucket of the dirty water weekly from the bottom spigot on the opposite side, but the water level stays the same. also, is it a problem that cold water enters the boiler instead of hot water ? does this lead to the sporadic clanging in the pipes i ofter hear ?

the best advice as usual…call a heating professional , not a plumbe, that has been recommended to you by a neighbor..
….unless you have a probe-type low water cut off.
In which case, just step away from the boiler and call a service company in once a year to perform basic annual maintenance.
To answer your question: The water feed line should NEVER connect directly to a steam boiler. It can be hot or cold but it MUST connect from the domestic water piping into something called a backflow preventer and then check valve and finally a shut off valve before terminating into the system return piping.
The idea is to have the fresh water mix with the conditioned return water before entering the hot boiler.
The arrangement you have may be causing some noise, but more likely you have an improperly-pitched pipe somewhere.
sounds like your low water cutoff/ automatic water feed is gummed up….you should be draining water out of it, not the boiler drain that you have been using…it is the big black cast iron control next to the glass, and has a ball valvd on it for draining
