Our contractor has taken over 5 months to renovate our 800 q. ft apartment. He said it would be 2 months. This might not seem like much but we are now living in the basement apartment with a premature infant, after a total of 9 weeks were spent in hospital. Every week he does one more thing after we call and threaten him. Every week he lies about when he will be here again. Every week he says he will finish. It would just be a few more days of work to complete. At the moment we owe him a little less than it would take to have someone else finish the job. Any suggestions? Should we just get someone to complete the necessary projects for move in?

  1. what a nightmare – you poor poor thing. You can’t pay contrators until the job is finished basically, or they’ll fuck you over. They trick you by doing the things that look big and asking you to hand over the bulk of the money. but in fact the finishes often take longer and are more expensive, so you always have to hold out paying until those are done. I hope your baby is ok.

  2. Sounds like mine. Go ahead and spill his name. I waited way too long to fire mine. I should have done it at the first sign of incompetence. I thought it would be a logistical nightmare. It was really easy.

  3. Agree with IB and donatella. Get someone new in there and finish. Don’t pay the current GC another dime. Be tough and don’t give in. What little extra you spend will be saved in time and peace of mind.

  4. Get rid of him, for God’s sake. Today. Change the lock (assuming he has keys) and just fire him. It is really easy. You have priorities, like your kid. Then find somebody else to do the work. Repeat three times, “this is easy, he is fired.”

  5. Hi
If you are looking to replace your current contractor, you can give us a call we recently renovated a 650Sq Ft Apartment in Park Slope and it took us just a few days over 2 weeks because of fine tuning, I have pics I can send to you and also referral if needed. You job should not have taken more than a month (depending on what was needed to get done). We provide free estimates & can come out to take a look to see what needs to be finished. We are licensed and insured. You can email us at the address below or give us a call (either myself or my partner can be reached to make an appointment).

    Thanks in advance

  6. An easy way to ensure that the general contractor doesn’t put your particular job on the backburner is to make sure that the cost of finishing the job is equal or less then what you currently still owe him.
Idealy if you get into this sort of a situation, get a second contractor in for an estimate. then do not pay your current contractor until he catches up with the balance of what’s left to what he has already done.
That will essentially reverse your situation. Meaning he will have to compete for you giving the rest of the job to him.
