What year was my house built?
I recently bought a home in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and I’d like to find out what year it was built. (I also just ordered the tax photos.) Any advice on how to get this info? Thanks! Rob

Go to DOB and have the file for your address pulled from the basement. Property shark estimated my house as 1910. The original building permit was in my file, dated approved 1880. It only took about 15 minutes. You can make copies of all in your file.

If it’s piped for gas light and has multiple fireplaces (originally functional) it’s pre-1910.
Propertyshark is great, and can give you a general idea, but often the dates are merely estimates. I have seen quite a few houses listed as 1931 that were obviously earlier than 1910.
Bob’s suggestion is a good one. Here’s a link with more resources/info: http://www.nyc.gov/html/lpc/html/faqs/research_resource.shtml
You can get lots of info via PropertyShark, but reliable historic information is not one of them. Also note that Landmarks, due to their own limitations, often provides estimated date of original construction.
Go to propertyshark.com and get a report fo ryour address.
it should get you all you need to know.
You could look through plat books at the Brooklyn Historical Society to find the earliest year that your house appears on a plat map. They also have Brooklyn City Directories that you could check to see the earliest someone is listed as living at your address.
