We are getting ready to re-brownstone the exterior of our 5 story, 20 foot wide Carroll Gardens building and I have to start interviewing contractors (arrrrg). I am no stranger to the renovation process but would love to start this search with a few qualified referrals.

In addition to the usual brownstone refacing process I would like to replace missing details including the extruded, beveled sections that are typical on the first floor exterior walls and the wide ledges below the parlor floor windows. We also plan to blue stone the deck and replace the cellar doors.

It would be great if the contractor did concrete work as well as I need to rebuild the cellar steps and replace the sidewalk (may or may not slate this area).

I am looking for a contractor that is a really good crafts person and has lot’s of experience in this area. Even though I expect to pay a good price for quality work I do not want to overpay. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

  1. I send the post from justinm. Z. Abedin is great. I too was concerned about preserving old as well as creating new details at my place. Z. Abedin was able to preserve the old stuff and mold new matching details that hard worn with age. When I compared prices a year ago, his was the best price to quality. You can reach him at 917 903 0196. Tell him Chris from Decatur Street referred you.

    Cheers

  3. If you want to come check out our facade, my neighbor and I are using Z. Abedin construction. I’m still in the scratch coat stage, but we added many details just like you were saying (the house face used to be mostly flat and we added window shelves and detail around the windows) that you can see. I really like this guy… he did our sidewalk and some interior cement work too as well as recommended some cheap contrators for other jobs.

His prices were pretty reasonable (near the middle of the range for brownstone repair) but the quality of his prior work was very good.

Send me an email if you’re interested moore dot justin at gmail dot com.

  4. Try AllRenovation, they recently refaced a Brownstone on President St. in Carroll Gardens in addition to a gut of the parlor. I saw it in the recent issue of NY Living magazine (November Issue). They worked on my brownstone in Windsor Terrace in 05/06. Give them a buzz, you won’t be disappointed with the quality of the work and customer service.
