About 4-5 days ago I noticed a significant drop in water pressure in my house. It’s not down to a trickle or anything but showers aren’t quite as great as they used to be.

National Grid has been doing work outside my house … looked like they were installing new pipes to service a newly constructed building up the road.

They finished and paved the road the same day I noticed the water pressure drop. Is there any way the two could be related? If not, any ideas as to what might be causing it?

Thanks

  1. Greenwoody…I’m assuming from your name you live in Greenwood Heights? I’m on 5th between 17th and 18th and I have the exact same problem starting at the same time. My bathroom sink and tub taps are at a virtual trickle. Interestingly enough, my kitchen sink was not affected. Where was the work being done that you speak of?

  2. If you still have one of the old lead mains, those can be a bit malleable and, with enough pressure, can perhaps be squeezed a bit. Maybe that is what happened here.

  3. There’s a Dig Safely program for most of NYS, but in NYC you need to call 311.
You should do so immediately and establish the history of the dig. You need to emphasize your concern that there’s been damage to the water main in order to get quick inspection. Re: the Dig Safely program—”A simple phone call, required by New York State, to Dig Safely New York at 1-800-962-7962 or 811 can prevent personal injury, property damage, and service interruptions caused by accidentally digging into underground electric, natural gas, telephone, water, sewer or cable facilities. Buried lines may be where you least expect them. …”
