Dear Brownstoner,

The previous owner removed some plaster walls around old fireplaces to expose the brick. Unfortunately now as winter is arriving I am concerned that we are going to lose all our heat through the fireplace flues? Does anyone have any experience sealing these up besides bricking these over? Much appreciation in advance!

  1. As long as you have no plans to use them…Buy a sheet of aluminum at Home Depot (and a pair of tin snips) and cut it to fit, wedging it up there. Stuff some insulation around the edges.

You can also cap off the top in various ways…rigid foam insulation also works well at both the top and the bottom. Use the aluminum duct tape
