hello! anyway long time lurker here but decided to sign up today cuz i plan to come to the happy hour on the 16th..

i just moved to park slope from harlem in july and honestly, i f’ing love it. i really didnt think i would at all. things aren’t as cheap as they were in harlem, but i guess as long as i dont go crazy things will be okay (bitter renter here yes. with my finances, i will never own. at least not in nyc)

anyway, i just wanted to say hi and that i enjoy a lot of your posts and i used to read this blog waaaay before i even thought of moving to brooklyn. i sorta wound up in park slope by luck. it was either harlem again or bushwick for me.

my fav. part of park slope is that everyone leaves free shit on their stoops!!! LOVE IT! i’ve gotten so much great shit that people leave. i pretty much furnished my entire bedroom with the free stuff people have thrown out. (okay that probably sounds gross, sorry).

nice to meet all of you! if you ever see someone on 5th ave and 1st street walking a pitbull and a beagle, it could be me (or my roommate actually. or our dog walker.. hmm) well see you on the 16th!

ps.. can anyone suggest any restaurants in the area that aren’t really overpriced but still a nice place to take someone? like if youre on a budget… maybe no more than 20 bux per person.

  1. Rob…those are basically the only gay bars in the neighborhood besides, Ginger’s which is a lesbian bar.

Gays also hang at Union Hall (I love that place) and The Gate, as well as others.

Park Slope, while having a substantial gay population, doesn’t have a ton of gay bars (if you hang around long enough, you’ll see that some of us constantly beg for more!) but having said that, most bars in the neighborhood are very welcoming and gay friendly.

I also like Commonwealth, Beer Table, sometimes Patio Lounge and Barn, next to Flatbush Farm.

Good bars up on Vanderbilt are a plenty too…I really like Weather Up and I hear Barette just started a “Queer night” last Sunday, which they plan to continue once a month, I think. Never been.

I also really want to try Franklin Park, the new beer garden type place over on Franklin Ave…

  2. Snarkslope…don’t forget, best chocolate cupcakes –
Chocolate Room (fyi – you can’t order more than 6 at a time, and yes, I’ve tried, It was one of those days)

  3. thanks for the suggestions! 🙂

one more question.. how about bars? are there any other gay bars other than excelsior and cattyshack in the area (lol i broke the stripper pole at amateur gogo night a few weeks ago. dont ask me HOW i was convinced to enter the contest. maybe it was the 100 dollar prize. clearly i didnt win). or any bars really.. i actually havent been to union hall yet..

  4. Try Peppinos on 5th for the best pizza in the Slope.

Red Hot II on 7th ave has the best Chinese food.

Load up on the appetizers at Zilli (Turkish) or Nana (pan-Asian).

Good brunches can be found at Bar Toto, Miriam and Bogota.

Lobo is good for Tex-Mex, and Rachel’s for burritos.

Fifth Avenue restaurant and Daisy’s are decent diners.

Fatoosh on 5th has good Middle Eastern.

Watana on 7th has excellent Thai.

There are many more, but that should get you started.

I’ll be curious what you think of Aunt Suzie’s. Many people like it, but I thought is was pretty awful.

  5. Yes, that was me. I know it’s probably never going to happen…especially in this economy…but I can still dare to dream! Crazier things have happened…

I won’t be there on the 16th unfortunately…my co-op meeting beckons that night.

  6. cool thanks dave and 11217. are you guys going to meet up on the 16th? 11217 are you the person who suggested that a keils(sp?) open up in park slope? i remember lol’ing at that for some reason.

  7. Welcome to the neighborhood! You picked a great one!!

There are a number of dollar stores on 5th Avenue below 9th Street. That area has some real bargains.

For cheap eats, also try Bonnie’s Grill on 5th. Press 195 on 5th is also great. There is a cheap Thai place that just opened on 5th also…can’t recall the name, but it’s up near Lincoln or thereabouts.

Five Guys Burgers up on 7th Avenue is great also!!

Enjoy…this will be a great weekend to explore…supposed to be terrific weather. The Park is going to be gorgeous this weekend…leaves are just starting to change.

Make sure you check out the Greenmarket up at Grand Army Plaza tomorrow, if you can. Every Saturday…
