Three weeks ago I had 17 new Pella Impervia replacement windows installed. And at the same time I had the guys from Federal Convservation Group blow in about an R-38 worth’s of insluation into the attic. Both crews were very profesional and did a great job. Now my only problem is adjusting the radiators to keep the top floor from getting to hot.
I am happy to recomend theese guys to anyone.

  1. I used Pella through the project manager John Slavin. His email is jslavin@pellactny.com . AS far as air sealing I have spent the last 12 weeks sealing every hole and crack inside and out. I can really feel the results, less drafts and so far less vermon.

  2. What company installed your Pella windows? Pella themselves? I had a quote for 8 custom windows for $11,770.80 which included installation.
My house is very drafty even though I have storm windows. I did email a weatherization company from one of the energy websites but no reply as yet.

  3. If you air seal your whole house, you will keep the air in the building from stratifying as much. Air sealing is the best method for reducing energy costs and improving comfort as well as the quickest payback. That is great that you already did such good measures to reduce your consumption.

Check out BPI.org for contractors that can do professional air sealing with blower door tests and diagnostics.

  4. Thanks 71, But I have a hot water system, my bad for not puting that in my first post. I think I may have it right by now. I’ll have to see what it’s like when it gets really cold.

  5. Try putting smaller steam valves on your upstairs radiators to redistribute the heat evenely. You may have to do a few trials with different sizes in different rooms before you get it to you liking. We had to do this with our entire 8 unit coop in PS and we actually got it to a point where the people on the top and bottom floors were comfortable. Then when we moved to BR, we had to do the same with our townhouse when we found that downstairs was a lot warmer than upstairs but again with trial and error we got it to a place where both floors are comfortable and we arent breaking the bank.

If you buy steam valves at a local hardware store they usually come with a guide to placing the valves in the areas of your house based on where your thermostat and boiler are located.

  6. FLH, The windows were about 12K, and the insulation was $2,100 20×50 roof plus 1 vent. My boiler is on about half as much as it was in the past. It does’t come on unless the out side temp is in the 48 degree range, last year it would kick in around 56.
