We want to replace the windows in our Federal stye house in landmarked district with double pane for energy savings. Really want to keep divided windows but historic photos show one over ones. Any way to convince landmarks that multi paned windows acceptable? we are of course planning to do wood, Marvin or Pella.

  1. A 1902 building would have likely had 2/2s originally. Curious, though when was your photodoc from?

In a federal style (or even federal revival style), 6/6 windows would be the logical choice. I don’t think that you’re going to get a runaround (famous last words, but…)

  2. Wow, this sound familiar. I tried to get Landmarks to let me replace my 6×6 windows, but hey insisted that they should be 2×2. I found historic photos from 1902 showing 6×6, and when I checked the landmark documentation it was of very poor quality. Still, after writing them a long, detailed, well-documented letter they still refused. I could have gone to a community hearing, but I really didn’t have the time to stop my project while they jerked me around. I think they are slightly absurd, even though I am a strong believer in preservation. My architect had no idea how to move forward with them. If you figure it out, let me know, because I ended up restoring my original windows, and they are not that efficient, although they do look great.

    Good luck.
