I’ve just started visiting the Brownstoner site and wish there was a site like this dedicated to Queens which is where I live. This site is such a great resource for getting home renovation advice and recommendations!

That said, if anyone happens to know of a great Handyman, please recommend them to me.
I need a handyman (or contractor) with experience to help “cap” or build a small roof over my bow window.

Thanks!

  1. I don’t know if you’ve found a handyman out in queens but you can try Bob Maletta at 917 886 3391. He and I work on a lot of projects. I’m an architect and can attest to the quality of his work. Good luck!

  2. davieeng, I have no answers for you but I just wanted to chime in and say how much I wish there was a Queens equivalent to this website as well. Maybe people are not big DIYers out in Queens? Its really too bad!

  3. Oh I see. Well, dunno. You want something that won’t leak. Have you asked your neighbors who they have used, if they have similar windows? Cute house by the way. In any case, can’t hurt to call Mr Handyman and ask if they handle work like that.

  4. I have a house in Nassau county. I’m doing an oil to gas conversion. It’s a one story ranch, with no basement (cement slab), the boiler room is in the interior of the house. The old/original boiler from 1949 will be removed and a furnace will be put in the attic/craw space (there is forced hot air). In the boiler room a new hot water heater will be installed.
DO I NEED TO RELINE THE CHIMNEY IF I AM ONLY VENTING THE HOT WATER HEATER? I’ve gotten conflicting answers from different contractors. This house was built in 1949, using this old oil boiler vented thru this chimney, and I’m sure nothing was ever done as far as repair.

    Please advise.

  5. Thanks for the Mr. Handyman recommendation.
I’m not sure if a roofer would be willing to do this type of job. The bow window is easily accessible from the first floor. And it only juts out three inches – so there’s not much space to cap off. Might have to remove the first layer of stone wall that’s above the bow window though.

Here’s a photo of my window–

I’m looking at probably capping it off with vinyl somewhat along the lines of this photo–

  6. Yes, I used to live in Queens, and Mr. Handyman of Queens is seriously great for small jobs like fixing broken drawers, installing enormous window shades in windows with hollow plaster surrounds, fixing toilets that flush too hard or too soft, getting doors to shut properly, etc. I would think your job is one for a roofer, however, not a handyman.
