This gorgeous, historic American Empire Period chest of drawers or dresser dates from Civil War era and is made with matched flame mahogany and walnut. Entirely hand made furniture, the drawers are hand dovetailed and the paneled back is rough sawn and hand planed. The rich deep finish is in very good condition, and all drawers open and close smoothly. Beautiful scroll details on legs and drawer fronts. Rounded top drawer. Brass keyholes and key. A solid piece of heirloom furniture that’s been well tended, polished and cared for through the years. Dimensions: 43″ wide, 23″ deep and 44″ tall.

  1. Thanks for the information! The time period and label were given to me by my mother, who got it from…who knows. I love the piece aesthetically but don’t have any room for it. I grew up in an old brownstone in Bed Stuy and over the years the antiques appear to have had babies and spawned new generations of stuff neither I nor my parents have room or use for. I offered to help them out by listing a few items. I actually have two other dressers, similar time frame, though slightly more elaborate. All three are just sitting in my living room, holding up magazines.

  2. I always am amused to the use of the label “Empire” and “Victorian” applied to American architecture and objects. These terms are questionable used in the context of American styles to say the least.

    Other than that, yes, I agree with Bob that this is a nice piece of furniture. Why are you selling it?

  3. It’s late Empire rather than the more elaborate American Empire style [i.e. factory made, using a band saw, rather than hand carved–the first mass produced furniture style] and, most likely, from the 1840s or 50s. Nevertheless, a very handsome piece.
