We want this to be the last season we lug our air conditioners from the basement and lose valuable window space. Does anyone have recommendations for those split system air conditioning systems or a name for someone who does?

  1. Unless you already have the ducts, a split unit system will always be cheaper to install than conventional central air. I’ve got a 36k, two head system upstairs which cost $5200 to install. The plaster repairs were on me though.

They pretty much keep the whole house comfortable except for maybe two weeks in the summer when I flip on a wall unit in my kitchen extension.

  2. I think the initial setup cost of a mini-split system will take more than a few years to offset with the energy savings. These units are expensive to begin with, and the installation can also be costly. I’ve bought 2 Amcorair units, but I’m motivated mostly by the increased energy efficiency and low profile of these units, not so much by the cost savings in the long run.
I’m putting my outdoor units on the roof, and the indoor units have a perfect nook between a chimney and a wall. I’m also glad I am doing this now, as we have the studs in place but not all of the drywall. This way all the hoses / wires can be pulled in between walls and onto the roof without having to make big nasty holes in the wall.

  3. Practically speaking, unless you have zoned central air, split units will be cheaper to run, if only because you can shut off the split units in rooms you don’t need to A/C, especially at night.

  4. anyone have any thoughts on the long term running costs of split airconditioners versus central air with ducts?

or can you reccomend a good site to read up on the subject.

btw those hidden units from fujitsu look ok as long as you have a spot you can conceal them in (eg drop roof in the room next door etc.

    cheers,
