slopenick is right, not all woods are good for bbq’s. You probably want to use wet wood chips from cherry, apple, mesquite, or hickory. Smoke is good- flames are not.
Also, never burn solid wood or charcoal in a gas grill it will melt the casting and the tank hose will catch on fire. Don’t ask me how I know that.

You oughta be pretty careful doing that if you are actually eating stuff cooked over a fire of various unidentified woods. Some can be toxic….
