I currently have my front loading washer/dryer in my bathroom. We are doing a renovation to the bath and I am considering moving it out. But not sure if it is worth the cost. Is it better to create a little laundry room in the back or leave it in the bath. Discuss?

  1. does anyone know of a good cheap plumber i can get to move my washer/dryer from the ground floor to the basement? the new location would roughly be in the same place (just a different floor)

  2. I’ve had washing machines in my homes since the late 70s. I’ve never had one leak. Then again, I’ve never been in a car accident before either but I always wear a seat belt.

  3. Bessie,

I’m not sure if you own but, back when I was a renter I purchased a portable washing machine.

They do tend to rattle a bit when they go through the spin cycle. Our solution was to place it on a dense rubber mat (about an inch thick).

You should also make sure each time you use it that the connections are tight. I had a mini flood once after deciding it was a great idea to do laundry after having put back quite a bit of wine. I forgot to hook the hose to the back. It was a good excuse to mop the floor.

Other than that I LOVED it. Worked fantastic (compared to laundry mat washers). The biggest plus was I didn’t have to lug the bags of laundry up and down the stairs or save quarters!

  4. I was recently hunting for an apartment so can give you one buyer’s perspective. I do not have a problem with a w/d dryer in the bathroom but prefer that there be a door in front of the unit. It’s not a deal breaker, but I’d rather not be reminded of the laundry I need to do every time I step out of the shower.

  5. Not sure what you mean by “in the back.” I would have to see a floor plan of your place to give an informed recommendation. I’m cheap so if I were you I’d be looking to leave the plumbing where it is and maybe finessing a closet for the washer dryer so that the bathroom looks more polish.

I don’t currently have a w/d in my apartment. I read alot of scare stories about leaking washers, shaking dryers etc. and it caused me to back off on the idea. What do others think? I’m in a brownstone above another apartment.

  6. Just curious, does anyone have a plumbed drain pan under their washer? If you believe web info (which I take with a large grain of salt) floods are something to worry about.

Also, do you use standard hoses or those floodsavers (i think). As toilet and sink flex connections hardly ever fail, and seem to be made of the same braided stuff, why the concern for washers?

  7. I have my front loader and dryer in the bathroom behind the door and it works fine. I don’t think you should go to the trouble of moving it.
