Can anyone tell me what “roughing” is in relation to plumbing? My house, which I purchased last year, has an open permit on it from 2003 which I am trying to resolve. The DOB site says (under the plumbing inspection info) “first floor rear roughing OK, basement roughin OK” but I don’t understand what this means. Any adive would be appreciated.

  3. Right, coltrane, btw do you play an instrument? lol. To further elaborate, there are two kinds of plumbing according to the DOB, ‘rough’ and ‘finish’. Roughing is the basic piping bringing up water (and gas) and returning waste, etc. ‘Finish’ plumbing is the stuff under the sink. AFAIK there are supposed to be an inspection for roughing, then a final inspection for finish. Sounds like they approved the roughing (which means the plumber can close up the walls, ceiling, etc.) but they didn’t get the ‘finish’ inspection.

  4. It means that a plumber came in and did all the unseen, rough, plumbing work that is in the walls and floors for a bathroom or kitchen.
