I got an estimate for replacing a tub and all shower fixtures. Just for plumbing labor, no demo or retiling, it’s $1400. Does that sound high or about right?

  1. Thanks everyone. I know and trust this plumber, but the number just sounded high at first. I guess he is in line so I will proceed.
And thanks for the tile quote too, because I had the same question about our tiling estimate.

  2. We just had our whole shower body replaced as well as new sink fixtures installed on the existing pedestal sink. The plumbing bill came to about $900 (Weiss Plumbing). The demo and re-tiling we did once the plumbing was finished came to about $1200 (plus the cost of the tile itself).

  3. I’m redoing my tiny (4′ x 8′) bathroom right now and the plumbing estimates were all over the place. Definitely get several bids. I called advertisers in the Brooklyn Paper after not being able to get enough licensed and insured contractor recommendations from friends.

Since i’m removing and replacing all fixtures and tile (same location, no pipes moving) my quotes were obviously higher than yours for only the tub/shower. But, to give you some idea of the range, I contacted about 10 contractors, 5 actually came over and estimated, and for labor only (all materials supplied) the bids ranged from $3,800 – $27,000 for exactly the same job, and all contractors were licensed and insured (co-op rules). Half the time I think they just eye-balled me and tried to guess the most expensive number they thought I would pay! So my advice, get as many bids as you possibly can and you will have a better idea of a fair value, especially considering construction costs have gone up considerably the few years, so comparisons of similar jobs from 2-3 years ago will be off the mark.

  4. Plumbers are indeed expensive. Figure 90-110 per hour for a licensed, insured etc. master plumber. Then he brings an “assistant” for $65 an hour. They work for a full day…that’s $1300 right there.

I’d get a few estimates but unfortunately i think you’ll find a similar price. Plumbing is one of those jobs in which you’re paying for a willingness to do nasty things in uncomfortable places.

Plus there’s always the slight possibility that things could go horribly wrong, and that’s why you need someone who’s insured. Every time we’ve had major plumbing work done there’s been collateral damage. Once they cracked the other side of the wall and once they damaged a gas line.

  5. actually such labor charge you a $60/hour.so let’s say they work for 8 hours then $480 a day and if they walk by and forth to impress you then it may take 2 days,so there not even $1000, so i guess u pay too much.get another estimates
