Hello,

I have 2 questions:

Does anyone out there know what the legal (building code) reguirement is for distance between top of stove and bottom of cabinets in kitchen? Second question – What are materials that are ordinarily used to create a safe and insulated space between stove and refrigerator if they have to be in close proximity? Thanks so much for all the helpful responses I have been receiving to previous questions!

  1. cabinet manufacturers sell a “heat shield” for installation between a range and whatever is next to it. you may want to ask a cabinet dealer to give a manufacturer a call to ask what the material of the heat shield is.

  2. 30″ minimum between stove and combustible cabinet. Being that our range hood vented to the rear, we had full use of the cabinet above and went with the 30″ minimum. The problem is that the range hood, which sticks out forward of the upper cabinets, gets in the way of my head when I lean over a pot. 36″ clearance would have worked much better for us (we have 42″ upper cabinets and we’re both about 6′ tall)

As far as the insulation question, I would go to home depot or lowes (the borg) and look for a thin insulation with a high R value (there was some silver stuff on a roll about 5/8″ thick). Affix to the side of the cabinet. Also a 1″ filler (air space) will also help.
