Built-ins...
I’m building built-in bookcases in the living room and am torn between: 1. having the electrical outlets remain the wall (with cut-out in back of bookcase) vs moving the electrical outlets to the baseboard/kick plate 2. having a book shelf above the large doorway (approx 8 ft) leading from the living room into the hallway…

Wondering what others have done in their homes and which would work/look best…..
Thanks in advance!
I would carry it over the door (and use that for rarely accessed or oversized items). It adds symmetry to the two verticles. As far as the outlet. If you need an outlet at that end of the room. Remove it to an accessible location. If not, trim it out inside the unit.
Could be I’m misunderstanding but how do you have outlets in the back of a built in bookcase and then keep access to it clear? I could see it for a TV or music system where it’ll stay in place but lamps, etc. could be a pain.
Same thing with an overdoor bookshelf. It’s a pain to drag over a chair or stepladder every time you need to reach. visually it could make the ceiling look lower whereas bookcases on either side draw your eye up and down. If I had the space I’d love nothing more than floor to ceiling bookcases, nice leather reading chair, the cat bringing my slippers.
If you’re going to have something on a shelf- a TV or music device, it’s nice to keep the electrical outlet higher up, through the back of the bookcase. If you want to plug in a floor lamp, vacuum cleaner, etc., put oit in the baseboard (though this may be a building code violation).
