We recently added a master bath and the grout on our shower floor is turning red – possibly the color from the stone tile bleeding?? Anyone have any recommendations how to fix?

  1. could it be rust coming from somewhere beneath? That’s usually a brownish-red but if you can put liquid whink on it, you’ll know for sure if the whink takes it out. I’ve rarely heard of bleach not removing color from organic material but it’s possible. but i have seen iron rust leach up from an old pipe and discolor surfaces so maybe?

  2. Try Comet and some elbow grease. Or post a photo.

I used to have really persistent pinkish-red mildew in my grout. We had to really work to keep it at bay, but we were in college — we settled for trying to clean the shower regularly–I won’t pretend we conquered it or tried very hard though.

Post a photo. It sounds like mildew.

  3. OP here. I tried bleach, with no effect. There is nothing to remove as it looks just like a stain in the porous cement-like grout. If this is mold growing from within the pan underneath the shower floor is my only option to dig up our new shower?
