Protecting Plaster
Is there anything you can do to protect plaster ceilings from loosening and falling during construction? The ceilings are in pretty great condition but all the work is making them fragile. Is there anything that can be done to support them during the work? Thanks

I second smokychimp’s advice on using plaster washers, to which I would add : I would also inject an acrylic adhesive, such as rhoplex between the plaster layers where its delaminating. Then when you are done, you can remove the plaster washers, and simply patch the holes. I believe the ‘this old house’ website has a video showing the basics of the process.
Sure — any place where the keying seems to be breaking (where the plaster is starting to separate from the wood lathe strips holding it up) drill in a series of plaster washers. Charles Street Supply (.com) sells them. You can use these to tighten up the plaster against the lathe. Disadvantage is you have to skim coat over the washers where this is happening, but that’s probably inevitable.
