Help please —
In one corner of my garden I piled chunks of broken concrete and bricks, then covered it in dirt to provide a false slope. I planted Vinka in several areas on the slope. It has been fine for the past several weeks. All the sudden today I have noticed that some animal has decided to dig a hole through the dirt and make a nest somewhere in the rock pile — AND ripped off all the vinka leaves and pulled them into its nest. I assume its a rat – I’ve seen a few in the yard, but I didn’t think that they burrowed. Any guesses on what it is/how to deal?
I had the same problem. Tried covering the hole, filling it with chicken wire and steel wool, sand, whatever. The rats always came back or moved to a nearby easier place, in my case a wooden planter on a low roof. The only momentary reprieve we got was when the rats were in the open more redigging their holes and some neighborhood cats killed a few. What you really need to do is get an exterminator to place bait stations and put tracking powder and bait in the hole. That exterminator needs to come around monthly, change the bait, check the hole, etc. Ask around for recommendations in your neighborhood. You should be able to find someone who’ll do it for around $150-$200 for the first visit and about $50-$75 per month thereafter. That amount should include some interior extermination for bugs and vermin, too.
Call an exterminator- they will put power in the tunnel that will kill. You will have rats everywhere if you don’t act soon.
Rats certainly do burrow, sometimes creating complex systems of tunnels. Did you think they only liked Subway tunnels? You should immediatly bait the tunnel.
I’ve never heard of a racoon burrowing into the ground, not to say that it couldn’t happen, but they usually feel more comfortable higher up. On the other hand, it is very common for rats to burrow.
You should call an exterminator company to come out and assess it. There are plenty of racoons in Brooklyn and in Bay Ridge in many backyards. My friend had a lot in her yard in Dyker Heights. I think they set humane traps for them and release them elsewhere.
