I am going to buy new kitchen stove soon. I like DCS stove. Here is my question, is self-cleaning useful and important feature? I haven’t used self cleaning feature and don’t know how important it is. Price is very different with or without it. $800 difference. I assume to use stove for 5years, is it worth to get this feature? Please give me your thoughts.

Thank you!

  1. I seldom used that feature in my last oven, but oh, when I needed it I was soooo happy it was there. If you can at all afford it, get it.

  2. Self-cleaners on ovens scare me. The oven door locks when you turn on the self-cleaner feature and no matter what the smells, fumes and heat the oven emits during the process (and you DO get fumes, strong ones) you can’t stop it and unlock it.

  3. I don’t have a freestanding one, but a built in and I was worried that using the self cleaning mode would warp the cabinet it’s in.

So, I have found that a steam cleaner is great for cleaning my oven. I think it cleans better than anything a chemical would be able to do. I bought this cleaner hoping they would clean my tile floors, but it’s terrible for that, at least the grout anyway. But for ovens, great!

  4. Another thing — the self-cleaning feature burns out some small part. the repairman told me that it needs to be replaced every 5-7 years (a couple hundred dollars) — this was for GE Profile (which I love even tho it is not a luxury brand!).

  5. Self-cleaning is not only expensive in terms of gas usage but the heat it generates is brutal on a warm day. If you’ve got A/C it’s almost pointless running it while the oven is throwing off up to 900 degree heat for as much as three hours.

  6. Depends on how often and how and what you cook.

If you make a lot of things that splatter, like meats at high temperature, it may be worth it. If, otoh, you’re a vegetarian and all you make is zucchini bread, may want to skip it 🙂

All self-cleaning does is turn up the heat very high to carbonize any deposits in the oven.

  7. But the self-cleaning feature produces noxious fumes itself, Mrs. L. In fact, in my oven’s instructions, it was suggested that pets shouldn’t be in the room while oven was “self-cleaning.”

They now make special oven cleaning products for self-cleaning ovens, and I use one of them. Don’t pay extra just to get a self-cleaning oven.
