Does anyone know if there is a place for the general public to bring construction debris within New York City?
I have a small amount of construction debris but some of it is quite heavy. I doubt the regular sanitation service would collect the heavier items, and debris removal guys seem to be shady at best.
Any advice?
So what is the closest public dump to NYC?
i found this on the nyc sanitation website, it says:

Hey, “Jimmy Legs”. When I started tearing apart the back yard and had 15 bags of dirt and rocks on the curb, I waited for them to pull up. I went out with a six pack and offered them a “hand and a beer”. I know it sounds contrived, but they turned down my help, took the beer and my 15 bags. When they noticed the $20 in the 6 pack they gave me a little nod and said thanks.
hey Fire Alarm Guy, what’s the protocol for giving gifts to the DOS guys? i certainly understand the motivation but i’m not sure how to go about it. do i just hang around until right when they’re stepping up to the trash cans?
You can also rent a .5 Cu Yd dumpster from a carting company.
When I was doing demolition here I got a little over-enthusiastic about the debris I was leaving for DOS. One of the sanitation guys took a magic marker and scrawled “Balls!” on one of the trash cans. I still have it here as a reminder to stage my garbage collection.
But since they shut down the dumping stations Sanitation has to haul away this stuff regardless so if you want to leave a large pile of junk for one pickup, catch them on the street before they hit your house and slip them $30. If they have room in the truck they’ll take it.
Each collection day you can discard up to 6 pieces of bulk, which includes bags of plaster, broken rock, or dirt (max weight 60 lbs); bundles of wood (no longer than 4 feet, nails removed); or rugs (tied in 5 foot lengths); and any other non-metal items too large for your can. However, you are dealing with guys who haul other peoples shit away for a living. Piss them off and they will leave your stuff behind, got through your regular trash for recycling violations, or several other hassles you don’t need. If you want things to go smoothly you have to grease some palms along the way. Particularly when asking someone to go above and beyond for you. It is a rare day when any kind of construction is completed in this town with out someone getting a pay out.
If it’s the DOS’s job to take all the stuff because the other dumps have been closed, why give beer and money?
Take care of your sanitation guys, and they will take care of you. Don’t be overt about it, and don’t over do it. 4 full trash cans twice a week = $20 bill stuffed in a 6 pack per week works for me and I never have a problem with my trash. Or hire private sanitation. Your call.
Oh, and it wouldn’t hurt to help them load it in the truck if it’s exceptionally heavy stuff. If you load all of it yourself while they polish off the beer, keep your $20.
