Two years ago I had paint removed from by townhouse. About six months ago, I started to notice some whiteness around a couple of bricks which I think may be efflorescence. How can I get rid of this?

  1. yes, muriatic acid can seriously damage you, not just as the mortar. People shouldn’t be advising DIY-ers to use it without at least also telling them to look into the necessary safety precautions and deciding if they can handle using it safely. I would leave (and have in the past left) that to the contractors, too.

  2. A little muriatic acid would do the trick, if it’s just a small area. Make sure you rinse the stuff off since it can damage the mortar if you don’t.

Keep an eye on it. Usually, efflorescence is a sign that there is excessive moisture trapped with the wall (the white comes from salts being absorbed by the water in the wall pulled through the mortar and then left on the surface as water evaporates).
