The fireplaces in the building where I live all have a forced air system that is the heat source. As a result it sound travels through the shoot so I can hear my upstairs and downstairs neighbor’s conversations, TVs, sneezes etc. Is there anything out there that is a buffer/cover that can be used when the heat isn’t on? I end up laying a dense pillow over the iron grate with a chair holding it up. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated. I’ve been thinking I need to just make something that can fit over the grate as a sound buffer.
If you can get a magnet to attach to the grate – those sheets will work. Before you go to the trouble of stripping paint – test out using any magnet.
The sheets don’t work well if there are many layers of paint. You have to strip them off.
Thank you for posting this I was just thinking about this problem in my own apt. and then I randomly came on this site and here is the solution!
I use these:

They are magnetic sheets that cover the vents, and you can cut them to fit.
