I am in the process of purchasing a new construction condo which has a closet that is for a washer and dryer. It includes electricity, hot and cold water, ventilation hook up and gas hook up. The one thing that the closet doesn’t have is a drain. I have seen many new construction condos that are set up this way. When installing and washer and dryer is there some time of protection I can install to protect the floors in case the unit leaks? I appreciate any helpful tips.
Thanks,
How can there not be a drain in the closet? Where would the water go after the wash and rinse cycles? Maybe a drain could be installed and tie into the drain for the washing machine.
The sensor is a good idea. We have a sensor that shuts off the water at the valve and electricity to the machine when it senses water under the machine. We’ve never had it go off falsely. It may be the FloodStop mentioned above, because the price was about the same.
I purchased a unit called FloodStop for $116 at Park Slope Plumbing. It is supposed to sense water and stop the machine. My contractor thinks they are too sensitive and will go off too often but I don’t want to take any chances with my new floors on the first floor! Haven’t had it installed yet. We will also put a pan under the machine to catch the water as it first spills out.
I’ve seen some people set the washer inside of a shower stall pan, the molded plastic/fiberglass kind kind readily available at Home Depot or Lowe’s.
It would certainly be good to have a drain hooked up to that just in case. Since this is a new build, can you have that done while construction is being done anyway?
It’s called an washer overflow pan. The high tech ones have a sensor that turns off the washing machine if the water gets to a certain level.
