We just had a house inspected for purchase and in the “storage room” of the finished basement space there are possible asbestos tiles covering the ceiling. How worried should I be about that? How hard is it to deal with and/or test?

Comments

  1. Fear not! Take a piece of the ceiling tile in a zip lock bag to KAM in LIC. Ask for the sample to be tested for asbestos. $20, 24 hrs for results. By all means, do not let the subarudrivingmilitantdemacratknowitallsonbrownstonernaysayers scare you! Even if it tests positive, it is NOT a deal breaker. Ceiling tiles are the easiest and least expensive to abate. I would do ceiling tiles myself if it were my house. I have experience, not just speculating. Good luck!

  2. ‘possible’?

You send in a piece of the tile to a lab.

As long as the tiles are not fraying or coming apart, you are generally better off leaving them in place. Removing them will be expensive and will risk getting fibers in the air.
