I know this has been posted a hundred times…but maybe someone can help me. I know you can call the city and have them come plant a tree or 2 on your street. However, I also read numerour people were able to “pick out trees and plant them youself”. How is this done? Is this what the “TREE PLANTING PERMIT APPLICATION” Will allow you to do?:

Here is a post from “RAY” who was able to do what I want to do…but he does not explain how he did this:

I just had a couple of trees planted in my block in Park Slope. The Parks Dept allowed me to pick from some that they selected. I was given two options, pay for the trees and have it done right away (by them) or wait and have it done for free. I chose to pay for them and they planted them within a week. This was in the late fall, I don’t know if they would be as quick in the spring. Any other time is just not appropiate to plant.

  1. 7:22…

Ya, you right…I highly doubt anyone will give me a hard time for planting a few trees on the weekend. I just sent in my permit to plan trees in the Fall…I dont see why it wouldnt go through. I called the forestry department and they told me I just had to fill out the permit, send it in, then they send someone to the street…if all is good they send me a letter saying I can plant the trees. So Im not sure if I need consent from the dept of transportation….but I wasnt told that.

  2. get a nice container, one that isn’t gaudy and obtrusive. plant your tree on a weekend to avoid any city agencies driving by and forget a revocable consent and all that nonsense. who has the time? if they give you a hassle then remove it, if not then enjoy the view. Just get a tree that doesn’t grow more than 20 feet tall, like a red crab apple or a dwarf maple.

  3. 9:25, procedurally you need a revocable consent from the Department of Transportation, as well as a bond. But Ray is right, the agency is not keen on the idea.

  4. That is the proper process for DIY street tree planting, but alas, you have missed the spring planting window (March 15-May 15). The fall planting season is October 15 – December 15.

  5. You have it, it’s on your own posting.

For 9:25… you do need a permit for that too. I hear the Dept of Transportation often doesn’t like them, but you should try, there are very many kinds of containers and there may be some they allow you to use.

  6. Does anyone know if you need a permit to plant a tree in a container and leave it on the street? The subway grates in front of our house don’t allow for any excavation 🙁

  7. Ray,

Where do I obtain this application from? Do you have a direct link?

    6:16…

We are putting in our offer tomorrow…the house has not been formally listed on any site yet…so I dont want to tell anyone which house it is until our offer is accepted 🙂

  8. You were looking at a couple of victorians in Bay Ridge.

So, which house did you decide to buy, do tell.

And are you going to post about the renovations.
