We are deciding between putting round or hex tiles on our bathroom floor. I like the look of the round tiles, but am concerned about the grout to tile ratio of circular tiles compared to hex tiles. In particular, I am worried that with white, or even gray grout , stains will be more prominent and cleaning would be more difficult. Have others used round tiles for flooring? Do you regret it due to the cleaning hassle?

Thanks!

  1. I installed the hex tiles in white with white grout. They look great but they get dirty and are hard to clean. But the look is fantastic. Your choice. If I had to do it again I would probably use a darker grout.Though I love the look of the white grout when clean.

  3. I installed them years ago in a guest bathroom with a dark grey grout and it wasn’t noticibly more difficult to keep them clean. I also didn’t notice them being slippery, even though they had a high gloss finish, so I think that there may be something to the more grout equals less slippery theory.

  4. I really like the penny rounds (I like the hex too so its a toss up). I didn’t use the penny rounds in my bathroom for the “too much grout” reason but I did use them in a small laundry closet. Now that I see them installed, I don’t think more grout would have bothered me. As long as you use a darker shade of grout, you shouldn’t have much of an issue keeping it clean looking.

  5. You have to love this look to deal with all those grout joints. Personally, it would drive me mad to clean all that grout. Over time you’re going to get stains, just like with any grout.

Don’t use polished tiles on the floor, it’s slippery…even penny tiles. They say that because there’s more grout it won’t be slippery, but that’s a lie.

  6. I recently installed two bathrooms with white, round, penny tiles. The round ones are less trouble to install than hex tiles. I wouldn’t go with white grout because of stains. I think gray grout looks better too. If you’re concern about stains, adding a clear tile sealer will help you keep your floor clean.
