Where are considering a house with a fireplace made of stones that goes from the floor to the ceiling. But we hate the fireplace. Is it possible to remove that fireplace and replace it with one we like? If so, what would something like that cost?

thanks

  1. Yeah, the one in the picture looks like facing to me – not the construction. I would think it would stick out further from the walls on the side if it were actually built with those stones. But yours may not look exactly like the one in the picture.

Either way, if it is structurally sound, covering it over has got to be a cheaper option than demolishing it.

  2. I highly recommend Manny Lasalle. Manny knows everything there is to know about fireplaces and chimneys — he helped me rebuild 2 mantles which I bought in pieces from Eddie Hibbert. (Did a fabulous job) Although I decided not to go the whole route and make them working fireplaces, Manny is very experienced at rebuilding/lining flues and chimneys and is an expert on safety and the effective functioning of fireplaces. He is also a mason (has rebuilt my crumbling chimney). He has built up a collection of mantles also, buying them from various sources including Eddie Hibbert. He is really a pro, excellent. You really should give him a call. 917-292-1825. Good luck.

  3. Call Andre @ A&A – When he relined my fp he had to demolish most of the column to do it, so I can’t see why he couldn’t replace the whole thing using temporary supports.
I like your FP (go figure) so if you are getting rid of those stones and hearth let me know and I’ll take them off your hands. A&A’s # is listed in the homepage ads.
    Good luck!
