is there anything we should treat the plywood wall with for the plywood wall to look like the sheet rock wall when painted or should we just throw a thin compound skim coat and then paint it.
You can skim coat plywood, if it’s firmly screwed down so there’s no flex in it. The entire panel would have to be painted with an adhesion surface like Plaster Weld prior to the plastering.
You might get passable results if you paint the plywood first with a shellac-based stain killing primer. It will NOT look exactly like the sheetrock, but it may be good enough.
you can’t skim coat plywood.
get a piece of “veneer” drywall – perfect for putting up over a stiff surface like plywood. Also good for plaster walls with serious imperfections you don’t have time to fuss with. They are usually 3/8″ thick – but lowes and home depot don’t carry them.
Get 1/8″ upson board from a lumber yard like dykes.
you’re going to have to pull it down and replace it with sheetrock.
I had a contractor who tried to use compound to blend a sheetrock wall with a large wooden post. The compound didn’t stick to the wood for very long (just long enough for him to finish, more or less, and disappear) and I don’t think it is recommended. Also, a skim is a different textrue from the sheetrock, so it won’t blend unless you skim the sheetrock, too. Can you laminate the wall with very thin sheetrock to get it to be uniform?
