Ductless A/C installer recommendations
We are looking for a recommendation for a contractor to install some split system A/C units in our brownstone. We have a general contractor overseeing the rest of the work (bathrooms, etc.), but he can’t seem to track down a good A/C person who is available to begin immediately. Thanks
I had Mitsubishi Mr. Slim system installed. 5 internal air handlers (the units inside each room that blow the air), and 2 external condensers.
The system is a good alternative to window units, which can be unsightly and compromise security, but two tips I can offer that I learned too late:
1) make sure that system you buy has a ‘repeating’ timer, so you can set it once and have the units turn on/off at the times you set each day until you turn them off. The Mr. Slim units I purchased (at least at the time) have a timer, but you have to set EACH INDIVIDUAL UNIT SEPARATELY each and every day if you want the units to come on automatically. In other words, if I want these units to act like central a/c and have convenience of whole house cooling, I have to go around to each of the units every day and program the on/off times b/c they do not ‘store’ the times and the timer is deactivated with each cycle…it’s not on a continuous timer.
2) Remember that there is a line running from each and every air handler to the outside compressor units. These units are great for semi-detached houses, but if your house is attached on both sides, you’ll have to come up with a creative solution for running the lines out to the back of the house, where the external units are usually placed.

Not the cheapest but awesome in responsiveness: Sams’ Airconditioning, 917-297-4002.
Sam is actually short for some incredibly long Sri Lankan name, and he’s had twenty years of experience installing these things in Sri Lanka before Mitsubishi and the other Japanese companies started selling them in the U.S.
On the other hand, he’s not so great at plastering … the hole in the wall through which the pipe to the outside condensor runs was no longer sealed off within a year. But you can fix that yourself with a little joint compound.
I also used EXP Air. Very happy with the service. had 4 units installed and I highly recommend them.
We did minisplit on 2 floors 2 years ago here in WT. Very happy.

Having those units on your wall or ceiling is rather blech. Can you try the miniduct system so you don’t have a machine hanging out in the room?
Try Fred at Rumba Air in Brooklyn. Do a search for him on this board…..
