Hi there. Hoping to find some advice. Our rear windows do not have bars on them and we would like have them installed. Any recommendations on who to go with? Costs etc?

Also would love some advice on the most hardcore door locks out there. Something like a Fox Police lock maybe?

Thanks!

  1. Oh and another incentive, we saved a pretty good amount of money off our homeowners insurance having an alarm system. Also have them add fire alarms on each floor that go to central dispatch at Protection One, then you save more money on insurance with that too. Some insurance companies require it actually.

  2. No, I did not put alarms on the upper floor windows. The alarm guy didn’t think it’s needed and said it’s not standard to do that.

I did put an alarm on the door to the roof hatch, and you could also put a motion alarm or breaking-glass alarm on or near your skylights if you have those. I didn’t but might in the future after the old skylights are replaced, I’ll see.

  3. Thanks 2:23! that sounds reasonable. ours is a one family and we only have two doors, and a hatch to the roof. Did you not put any alarms on the upper floor windows? I am going to take a look at the archives on this. 🙂

  4. OP, we have Protection One. That’s the one I went with after researching the topic here in archives. I want to say it was $2,000 for installation. The monthly fee is not that much. I can’t remember what it is now but around $40 I think.

We got it installed on 5 doors and 6 windows. If you were to put alarms in fewer places you’d pay less for installation. Installation cost depends on where you put it and in how many places.

  5. guest @ 1:00. thanks for the input.. who do you use for your alarm? have you been happy? if you don’t mind me asking what is your cost on that? our front has the original bars. if i went for bars in the back i would want something more secure. not sure how they would attach as the back is brick covered in stucco.

guest @ 1:39. it is. thats good to know.

  6. I feel far more secure with an alarm system, not bars. I had a house in another city that was broken into and the thief tore the bars right off. It can be done. Especially when the bars are added later with screws. The bars on our brownstone’s basement windows are original and installed directly into the facade and cement. The bars that are attached with screws onto a facade can be torn off. This was confirmed by the alarm company man, on top of what I myself know from experience. So we don’t even have bars on any of the parlor floor windows. They just get dirty, need constant cleaning, and what’s the point of them anyway.
