Who owns the sidewalk space in front of our building?

Our 7 unit condo on 3rd ave is trying to determine how much space we have the rights to in front of our building. I know we are responsible for shoveling the snow in front of the building, and can get cited for excessive trash in front, but can we put large planters on the sidewalk? We’re trying to beautify 3rd avenue 2 planters at a time, so any commentary would help. Thanks!
According to the DOT (at 311) it has been illegal to have planters in front of the buildings for about 3 years. They changed the law after the embassy bombings.
That’s what lawmakers and politicians do. How much time and taxpayer money do you think was spent deciding who and where planters should go? Then there is the expense of staffing to answer the calls (how many does it truly take) to decide yes or no.
There’s something funny about “illegal planter.”
Hands up, chrysanthamums!
Um, no you can’t put planters on the sidewalk without having it approved by the city (DOT maybe?)
Yeah, it does make sense to find out what’s legal before you spend on a planter and plantings, doesn’t it? It isn’t that hard…
12:28 is WRONG.
I received a $150 ticket for an illegal planter.
Just put one out there, wort that could happen is they see it and remove it (Not Likely). How are they going to know it was you? Maybe one of your neighbors decided it was a nice spot for a planter…
NYC DOT(ransportation) regulates planters on the sidewalks. They have regulations to determine whether a specific location is appropriate. (i.e. distance from fire hydrant, bus stop, etc. Contact them and they will let you know if you can get a permit. Its not very complicated.
Call the bbg. They have a greening brooklyn contest every year. They probably know the city rules better than the monkeys at 311.
