Hi there!
We just moved into a new house in Park Slope. Our neighbors are clearly renovating the house next door into what looks like apartments. The problem is they have a huge loud pit bull looking dog that they leave in the yard consistently and barks all the time. Since we’ve never seen the neighbors we don’t know if they leave the dog out when they are not home or what, but the dog spends a major part of everyday outside barking. When we come out on our deck, the dog barks and growls at us. Since we just moved in we don’t want to get things off on the wrong foot, but any ideas on this problem? Should we leave a note for the neighbors, call the city or something? What’s the protocol? It’s so annoying!

  1. My neighbors dog drove me crazy for 3 months. I didn’t know what to do. Everywhere I turned, it is recommended that you contact the dog owner before contacting animal control.

This can be very stressful to approach the neighbor. So I started a web site that addresses the problem, anonymously. http://www.barkender.com

I have done a lot of research, nuisance dog barking is a social issue. I am working on http://www.barkender.org. This site will address the issues that nuisance dog barking causes on a social level. The burden of proof is on the victim of nuisance dog barking. Controlling nuisance dog barking should be the responsibility of the dog owner.

There is a revenue stream here for local government. Animal Control Officers should be on-duty (or on-call) 24/7. Victims of nuisance dog barking should be able to file a complaint with animal control whenever the neighbors dog is barking. Animal Control should be dispatched immediately. Dog owners should be fined (after maybe 1 warning) when there dog is caught barking excessively by animal control. This will change attitudes about who is responsible for controlling a dogs barking.

Hoping for a more peaceful, and quiet America!

  2. Here is the ONLY solution which works: sell your house and buy another one. Check that the new place does not have barking dogs next door or nearby before buying it. We have just done this, and after 15 years of a barking dog next door and trying every way to stop the noise, we gave up and sold our house. We moved a week ago to this new place which is lovely and quiet! Being free of the barking makes a HUGE difference to our quality of life and I am beginning to remember what it is like to live normally and freely! It takes time, effort and money to move house, but it is soooooo worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Just kill the dog. just fucking kill it.

If the owner won’t be reasonable no matter how many times you try to be human and talk and explain and talk and explain and talk and explain about how his animal has infiltrated your right to peace in your own home, then you must talk to him in a language that this animal will understand and kill the dog. Leave the bloody carcass nailed on his door and hope the sight will help him recognize his own nature

  4. I have been having the same issue for about a year now- I’ve called 311 NUMEROUS times – I have several complaint numbers and each time I all them I give them the previous numbers and let them know this has been an outstanding issue with no resolution for a long time. I have confronted the neighbors directly MANY times. Politely, normal toned as well as louder and temperamental. NOTHING comes out of it- It makes a difference for about a day or two and then back to normal at which point my hand is on their doorbell again at 2,3,4am, whatever time I dont give a damn anymore. I’ve called the police several nights, gone to the police station personally
and nothing works. I can personally vouch for that. I have lost weeks and weeks and months of full nights sleep. And when I’m home during the day I just wanna rip my head off from the noise. I live in a New York metro suburb and I’ve heard all the rules of calling 311 and getting an inspector to come and inspect the premises. BULLCRAP. I’ve called more than 10 times, no inspector, no nothing. And even if they were to come they come whatever time they want to and the dog has to bark for 10 consecutive minutes while they are there. GOOD LUCK controlling that situation. I’m am the same situation as you and have no idea what else to try either. Sorry to hear that you have the same issue. I COMPLETELY agree with you where unless you are the person that is actually being affected and is the one losing night after night after night of sleep you CAN NOT imagine what it feels like unless you are in it. Atleast we can relate to eachother in the end. Feel free to keep the dialogue open between us just in case something works for one of us. Thanks

  5. I think it’s better to talk to your neighbors personally rather than just leave them a note so that you can make them fully understand the message you are trying to relay. In talking to them, you can also recommend a product to help them control their dog’s excessive barking. Here’s one product that is effective, safe, and easy to use for dogs. When dogs start to bark excessively, simply get the Craig’s Paw Old Fashioned Bark Stopper, shake it, and regain control of your dog’s barking. It’s just that easy, dog barks, you shake hand, and dog stops. To know more about this product, just visit http://www.craigspaw.com.

  6. First of all, all of you poor folks kept up by barking neighbor dogs have my deepest sympathy. It is more than just an annoyance for us, it is literally affecting our health, and well being. We have put up with this off and on for months now,and just within the last 3 weeks, has become a real problem. These dogs bark all night long, and only cease when it is finally daylight, probably to get rested up for the next night. While we do agree that it is the owners responsibility, they are not even there anymore, just pop in once in awhile to feed them, we assume, and off they go again. The dogs are left on their own all the time, and therefore, are bored, and becoming more aggressive. We witnessed one of them biting a neighbor that was simply walking by the house last week. We have called animal control three different times, and the only response we get is them knocking on the door, or course, to no avail since we informed them they arent even home most of the time. We are decent, law abiding citizens, but we are also very sleep deprived, and just about at our wits end,and are ready to take the law into our own hands, since it is obvious nothing is going to be done about this. My husband has a job that requires constant alertness, and attention to detail, and he is finding it very hard to perform his job correctly when he is not getting the needed sleep. I know it isn’t right, but I lay there and have all kinds of fantasy’s of different ways id like to kill those dogs. And I would venture to guess, anyone who doesnt sympathize with those thoughts has never been kept awake on a nightly basis by very loud barking dogs. Any suggestions what we could do about this? The neighbors are into drugs,so if we should happen to catch them home, wont accomplish a thing, except a shouting match. Its obvious animal control isnt going to offer us any relief..im open to suggestions…thank you,oh, btw, we live in WA state….

  7. These are some interesting solutions. Going directly to a neighbor certainly helps, but when that fails, has anyone considered using a mediator?

I’m a reporter working on an article on mediation, and I’m looking for people who have used a third party to these barking dog disputes. Maybe mediation worked; maybe not. If you have a story you’d like to share, please contact me at afitzgeral@usatoday.com and you can tell me how it went.

  8. My neighbors have like 5 dogs and one or two of them barks at everything and growls at us when we walk outside. If the barking gets ridiculous I throw a fire cracker out the back door of my house. It scares the dogs and they stop barking. I don’t throw it near the animals, but the sudden loud noise simply frightens them. If I was consistent about it I am fairly certain the animals would be conditioned not to bark at all. Give it a try.
