We just bought a 1939 brick row house and are doing an electrical upgrade. Rewiring and increasing the amp service. Does this work require an inspection by Con Ed and/or DOB at the completion of the job? If so, do we have to notify DOB and/or Con Ed, or does it happen automatically? Thank you!

  1. here’s a different question on the same topic – what happens if you get an electrician to file with ConEd, he begins the work, gets the new meters in, but then won’t show up to finish the work, and hence won’t get the inpsection to happen either? could a different electrician take over at this point? or does it have to be the one who filed in the first place?

  2. Your electrical contractor needs to pull the permit and get it inspected. If you need increased service, the contractor will submit a load letter to ConEd, which may take them a few weeks to a month to respond to indicating if there is enough service already. If you DO need to increase it, then ConEd will be involved in providing the new line from the street. If you have a licensed electrical contractor, they should know all this.
