Re-opening a fireplace
Has anyone here had any experience restoring and re-opening a wood burning fireplace? What are the costs of a project like this? Can all bricked over fireplaces be re-opened? Thanks!

Can you guys tell me rough estimate as to how much it will cost for open 4 possible 5 fireplaces? I got a quote last year for 25k for 4 fireplaces that includes relining the chimney and adjusting the firebox so you can use as a wood burning fireplace.
Thanks.
I used Manny LaSalle. He’s all over this site. He did an excellent job by opening a fireplace that hasn’t worked in ages.
Above poster is right. I did it, and I love my fireplaces. To answer your question, no, not just all fireplaces can be converted to wood (which is the correct word–most fireplaces in Brooklyn were originally gas or coal). And that later fact is why not every fireplace will work well for wood. You need the fireplace itself to be of a certain minimum depth to accommodate logs. You also need a flue that workers can jam a new steel liner down into. I used Fireside (and Brownstoner published an extensive photo gallery of my project) and was happy. Others often mention A&A, which advertises to your right.
