I am planning on doing some renovations to my pre-war apartment, but before I begin, I want to make sure I take the proper precautions with respect to lead paint.

Anyone have any tips on precautions that should be taken?

Can anyone recommend a lead paint testing company and/or a good HEPA filter?

Thanks in advance!

  1. my son tested a little high for lead so we found luke gray (spacecollector@yahoo.com) his website is brooklynlead.com
he came ot our house, took samples , sent them to a lab, explained to us what we needed to do, where to get the hepa vacuum etc.

and then followed up with a full report , explaining lab results etc.

i felt he did a great job, …. and when my son retested three months later , his lead level was down three points (from 8 to 5)

    good luck, jenny

  2. Whatever you do don’t use your regular home or shop vac for lead dust clean up. Only a professional grade Heppa vac can contain micro lead dust.I got mine from Aramsco.com (Long Island City) They sell all sorts of lead containment products and might even rent out vacs.

    Good Luck!

  3. So when you empty your shopvacs and heppa filters, what do you do with the toxic waste? Landfill? Wash it down the drain? Really, what do you do?

  4. It’s safe to say that any paint bought and used before 1964 had lead in it. Sometimes large quantities of lead, if it was a white base paint, priming, or covering paint.

So you can presume that your renovation will stir this up. If you follow a few precautions you should be okay, make sure that when you bring walls or parts of walls down you are misting the work with lots of water to keep the dust down, and cleanup of stray dust is important. Never try to strip any window or door frames by sanding or grinding.

You should be particularly religious about cleanup. Don’t eat or smoke without scrubbing your hands like a surgeon beforehand, mop clean the space at the end of the day.

It’s too easy to get excited about this stuff but just keeping extremely clean job-site habits will take care of it
