My coop is looking to do core samples of the roof in order to determine the condition so that we can decide whether to resurface or rip up the layers and replace. One contractor wanted to do a 2 sqaure foot sample & the other wants to do a 2 sqaure inch sample. In looking on the internet, it says that 4″ – 12″ is standard. On one hand, a large sample would give a better view of the wood, on the other hand it is more likely to leak when patched. Does anyone have any advise on what is the standard size for doing core samples ?

  1. I recall doing a 12″ sample at my coop. But unless you are a very small building, you should be working under the direction of an engineer or architect, and they should specify the size. Else not only will you be getting different sizes, you will be getting different contractor opinions…and who’s gonna mediate the opinions?
