Our property neighbors 2 parking lots and at one time there was a nice strand of barbed wire that bordered our fence. At some unknown point, one of the supports rusted away and now its curled up in one corner of the fence blowing in the wind and catching every plastic bag that floats by. As much as we joke about the urban abstract art in our backyard, its not entirely safe just hanging on one rusted support like that, it certainly is not a deterrant and jokes aside-it doesn’t look good. Who can i call to cut this curliecue away and rehang some barbed wire?

  1. Not sure whether it’s illegal per se (might be, I don’t know), but it’s probably not smart in terms of liability.

You say barbed wire, but it’s probably razor wire, as actual barbed wire doesn’t prevent humans from doing anything–it’s for cattle.

Razor wire can cause surprisingly serious injuries because its designed to snag the body. If a kid attempts to break into your backyard (as kids do, which is why the razor wire is probably there), and gets badly injured, you will definitely feel bad, and could get sued.

I wouldn’t use it for this reason. Its potential to inflict injury that is seriously out of proportion to the trespasser’s crime is an ethical problem for me.

  2. Really? illegal? Barbed wire lines the back wall of every house on my street (except mine any neighbor’s). Does it make a difference if the backyard butts up against a commercial parking lot? Can someone post a link to the code prohibiting barbed wire? i have search on the DOB website but have not been cussessful in locating it. thanks mucho.

  3. If it’s a small piece of barbed wire, you can wrap it in an old sheet or something, tape it thoroughly, and put it in a plastic bag IF you keep in mind that a human being has to pick up that bag and should not get cut.

If it’s a larger quantity, cut it down and call a scrap metal hauler. I live in Bed Stuy and see guys in vans and pickups hauling scrap often. The next time you see a guy carting around a huge quantity of junk steel and light metal in a really beat up pickup, flag him down and ask him if he’s a scrap hauler. If he is, he’ll probably take it for free.

  4. Back in the day I used to imagine a line of designer barbed wire for urban homesteaders like myself – folks who wanted protection – but style, too! Now it is a bit passe in the BK, but I guess there are a few strands still out there.

  5. Bunkerlabs–shame on you for being so catty—I am not afraid to cut down some barbed wire but I do not know how to dispose of it (its clear that the trash guys will not take it) and I do not want to string new barbed wire myself.

what I really need and what the post was requesting was for someone to rehang the barbed wire and to haul away the old stuff.

I would appreciate any helpful suggestions
