Trees?
Hey I’ve never had a backyard before and wish to put trees in. I am thinking about japanese maples, pines and cherry blossom trees. Maybe some birch. Does anyone have any suggestions of what does well in brooklyn? Oh and we are in Ft. Greene.

I would suggest that before you put trees in, you think carefully what you want your yard to look like a few years down the road. You may be very smitten with the tree idea now, but you might find that you’d like more sun than all those trees will allow you. Maybe you would like also to plant some flowering sun-loving shrubs, for example. If you have the resources, consult a landscape designer who can provide you with a design that you can work towards over time.
How about semi-dwarf fruit trees? Select carefully for which varieties will actually do well and bear fruit.
I have a semi-dwarf pie cherry tree, and would have loved to plant a Service berry. They get blue berry like fruit.
lol. have your personal assistant speak to your butler about directing your gardener to hire an arborist.
Why hire an arborist to plant a tree?
I’ve used bamboo from Massachussets, a Cherry tree, and a maple tree…really nice colors and activity in the yard thanks to them.
Look at dwarf trees for the reasons 12:38 names.
Also don’t blow your budget on buying several young, small trees. Buy one tree that’s a little bigger so it has a head start on growth and will look more impressive in your garden from day one. Of course it still has to fit through your front door, house and back door so it can’t be too big. A garden designer is great if you can afford it, but if not, at the least definitely hire an arborist to plant any trees. Brooklyn Botanic Garden can recommend arborists.
Call the brooklyn botanic garden. they have a free help line certain days/times. check the website. they can also recommend a garden designer if you want that. My advice is avoid overcrowding with all those you named and try to stay in proportion to your space. Select trees that won’t outgrow your space in 5-10 years.
