Does anyone have suggestions for a color scheme for a two-story hallway of a typical brownstone? I need to chose a paint color and new carpet. Looking for something neutral and tasteful that will not show dirt but at the same time will brighten up the area. The woodwork has some sort of varnish/faux wood paint that looks like a medium/dark wood stain. Specific colors and photos would really be appreciated. I’m definitely challenged in this area and need all the help I can get before making a final decision.

  1. Go look at commercial carpet samples. Pick one that is heathery – that is to say, has many colors in it – that you like. Then pick an off white paint color that has the main color of the rug in it as the base – so it looks good with the rug. Then pick a trim color that is a darker shade of whatever color is the main color of the rug.

We used a light purple or plum-ish color carpet. (Sounds yucky – but because it has many colors in it, it is not, but looks good.) Then used Benjamin Moore Atrium white on the walls (because it is a white with a tiny slight pinkish white base tone) in eggshell finish on the walls. Trim was a darker color faded purplish. Works well, looks great.

So, if you like the grey carpet tones, pick an off-white wall color with a grey base, etc.

If you have floor tiles on the first floor, then pick a carpet color that goes with the tones in the tiles (that’s how we ended up with the purplish color – was the logical choice based on the original tiles on the first floor hallway, which we were not carpeting over.)

  2. Absolutely everything in the Windsor Terrace reno appeals to me and all of the choices are so classic and tasteful. I’ve definitely considered going with Abalone which I believe is the same color paint used in the Windsor Terrace hall reno. If I do, what color carpet should I chose? Also, all of the mouldings in my hall are wood tone, not white.

  3. Check out the Windsor Terrace reno blog. It is well documented with photos and paint swatches. Her choices for her hallway are neutral and might appeal to you. You’ll have to look back to the last 4 or 5 posts — she’s prolific.

  4. Thanks for the suggestions of wallpaper but I think I would rather stick with paint. The hallway is not visible from other rooms. I’m currently renting both apartments (one on each floor) and am looking for a practical and pleasing color scheme. Right now there is an off-white BM color on the walls and dark blue carpet on the floors and stairs. It doesn’t look bad but needs to be refreshed. Years ago I came up with a color scheme on my own that I thought was pretty but once the walls were painted and the carpet put down it was absolutely hideous. I cannot afford to make any mistakes this time around. lol More suggestions please! Thanks.

  5. You could definitely try wallpaper instead of paint – there are some very nice vinyl papers out there – a little more durable and easy to clean. Farrow and Ball comes to mind as a possible source.

  6. Is your hallway visible from the rooms it serves? Do you have a color scheme in those rooms that you like — doing so can provide nice continuity to continue some variation of that scheme into the hallway. I have a friend that just wallpapered her hall with a large floral print and it looks fantastic. The floral print picks up colors used in the living room. Going in another direction, I have a friend that painted her hallway a beautiful, rich magenta and it contrasts beautifully with her green living room — it feels very warm and welcoming when you walk in. Have fun.
