Hey guys, my name’s Jade. I was just browsing through for the past hour or so, and I read all about the crime increase in Brooklyn in the past year. Bed Stuy was one of the areas, and I was just wondering if anyone could shed a little light on the area on Bedford Avenue between Myrtle and Willoughby, crime-wise. I know it looks pretty boring and it’s not the most beautiful street, but how is it, crime wise? I just rented a room on that street, used to live on 16th in South Slope where I could come home at 3am by subway without a problem. Thanks.

  1. Thanks. I’ve been there a few times, moving stuff in, and it seemed fine. A good mix of people too, lots of whites, blacks, jews, what have you… I always like that. I felt fine all the times I went there, a few times it was dark, but I just don’t know about walking from the subway to my place after certain hours.

  2. sigh. I don’t know anyone who says it is like Sesame Street (which actually was first created for economically and educational disadvantaged kids, thus the inner city setting). Bed-stuy is really big and has lots of different areas. I’m not sure I would pay much attention to a drive by glimpse somewhere in bedstuy as being helpful to your information seeking. I spend sometime on Bedford (at the Y), and find it to be a very busy traffic wise. My bf and I have never had any trouble even 6 o’clock in the morning (but we are big guys going to the gym!). Unlike Stuyvesant Heights it seems to lack the really established bourgie feel that makes some feel safer. That said the 88th precinct captain (of FG- Clinton Hill) told me his worst problems with robberies etc were on the “nicer” blocks, as opposed to the drug dealing over nearer to Fulton/Grand/Classon. I am not sure what motivates the haters to be so down on particular neighborhoods, but the best advice was from 7:13 who suggested you just wander around at different times and decide how comfortable YOU are.

  3. big article today on the increasing crime in 4 neighborhoods in brooklyn…bed stuy is one of them.

but people who live there say the neighborhood is like sesame street so i think we should believe them over the police statistics.

  4. Get out while you are still alive, your lucky to even tell about it. Oh and i have a black friend who lives there and he said there is more shooting in Bed Stuy then there is in Iraq. God bless

  5. friends of mine live on that block. it’ll never win any Best Block competition, but it has always been safe when we’ve been over there. i think the laundromat there is 24 hours, which might provide a modicum of security. the auto shop makes a lot of noise sometimes, but considering it’s Bedford Ave, you must be expecting some background noise. i know one of the roommate did get suckerpunched on the street but i don’t think it was right around there. you can still probably come home late since the block is relatively close to the subway, but stay in the lighted parts of the street!

  6. I won’t pass judgement on Bed Stuy, everything I hear is hearsay; however I will pass along something I personally witnessed 3 weeks ago. I was driving through Bed Stuy and stopped at a light. At the corner appeared two lovely older women talking, and a 3rd women was walking toward them from across the street. It all looked peaceful..until the 3rd women struck one of the other 2 in the face and then they preceded to wrestle and box. Words were being exchanged such as ‘I told you every time I see you I will hit you’ and much worse. The 2 fought for a good 2 minutes while I tried breaking it up from my car. Worse yet was that this all appeared normal to the women, any many others that walked by without blinking, and once it ended they went about their business. It didn’t feel right to me but this really happened. I’m still in shock over it.

  7. The best way to get at any neighborhood’s safety is to go there yourself. Everyone has a different threshold, and safety means different things to different people. Different things trigger sensations of unsafety.
